PEOPLE NEWS It is with deep sadness that Dairyland Seed shared that general manager Tom Strachota suffered a heart attack and died Nov. 21. At the time, he was playing tennis with friends. Strachota was 63. Throughout his career, Strachota was involved in leadership roles within the seed industry, and the American Seed Trade Association. He was an emeritus member of the University of Wisconsin- Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Board of Visitors, and in 2002 he received the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders recognized Allen Van Deynze with the Public Plant Breeding Award. This award is given to a person who has made outstanding basic con- tributions to the advancement of plant breeding and genetics in the public sector. Van Deynze serves as research director for the University of California, Davis, Seed Biotechnology Center. PRODUCT NEWS In the National Sorghum Producers Yield Contest, DuPont Pioneer hybrids took seven of eight first-place category finishes and, overall, earned 18 national titles. First-, second- and third-place national honors were awarded in each of the eight divisions: irrigated no-till, irrigated reduced till, irrigated conven- tional till, irrigated double crop, dryland no-till, dryland reduced till, dryland con- ventional till and dryland double crop. Pioneer won 66 of 102 state titles. Monsanto announced the commercializa- tion of Bollgard 3 XtendFlex Cotton, the first commercial cotton with full federal approvals for the trait and in-crop herbicide system to combine three modes of action for lepidopteran insect control and herbicide tolerance. A limited release of Bollgard 3 XtendFlex to select growers is planned in 2017, with a full launch planned for 2018. DuPont Pioneer introduced 54 of its highest yielding line of soybeans to-date, the A-Series and 53 top-yielding corn prod- ucts. Available for 2017, the soybean varieties range from matu- rity Groups 000 to 7, and the corn varieties range from 72 to 118 comparative relative maturity and features 29 new genetic plat- forms. The Pioneer brand A-Series lineup has a broad range of trait options. The soybean line consists of more than 30 varieties with Roundup Ready 2 Xtend technology, 11 glyphosate tolerant varieties, a Pioneer brand Plenish high oleic soybean variety plus conventional, LibertyLink and DuPont STS varieties.
