GMO Product Control Law Passed by Ukrainian Parliament

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted draft law No. 5839 which will control the circulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically modified products for food safety, according to a release.

The law’s implementation will put Ukrainian legislation in line with European Union GMO legislation. The document is based around the 8 main acts in the EU law focused on GMOs.

According to the release, “The law introduces European mechanisms for the state registration of GMOs, a ban is introduced on the cultivation and circulation of: GMO corn – permanently, GMO sugar beets and rapeseed – within 5 years from the date of entry into force of the Law.”

The law will also require the use of labels that state, “with GMOs”, “without GMOs”, “produced from GMO raw materials” — this is in accordance with EU legislation.

The law will be implemented with the goal of increasing the efficiency and transparency of state regulation procedures when it comes to GMOs and to create clear, transparent rules for business related to GMOs. The State Register of GMOs will be created and managed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

According to the release, “The law enters into force on the day following its publication, and is put into effect three years after its entry into force.”
