Meet Claire Luby of Open Source Seeds

A recent graduate at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Claire Luby’s research focused on carrot genetic diversity and intellectual property, or IP. She continues to pursue this research at the university, along with a number of other projects, including working with a Native American tribe in Wisconsin on seed production and serving as executive director of Open Source Seeds. She explains that Open Source Seeds is an open source system for plant variety releases, kind of like open source software. The initiative is still in its infancy but this is something to keep your eye on.

During the 2017 National Association of Plant Breeders’ Annual Meeting, Seed World Publisher Shawn Brook had a chance to talk with Luby about how she first became interested in plant breeding, her mentors, most influential book and goals for the future.
