Corn Acres Down in 2022, Soybean Acreage Up

As summer continues on and harvest quickly approaches, the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) followed up on the Prospective Plantings report released in March. After surveying around 9,100 segments of land and 64,000 farm operators during the first two weeks of June, NASS estimated 89.9 million acres of corn planted in the U.S. for 2022 and 88.3 million acres of soybeans. That’s 4% less corn from 2021, and 1% more soybean acres this year.

Here’s some highlights from the Acreage report:

Corn growers are expected to harvest 81.9 million acres of corn for grain, but that’s down 4% from 2021. Something unchanged from 2021, 93% of all corn acres planted in the U.S. are biotech varieties.

Soybean harvest is estimated at 87.5 million acres. Similarly, producers planted 95% of soybean acreage using herbicide resistant seed varieties, which is unchanged from 2021.

For cotton, acreage is estimated at 12.5 million in 2022, which is 11% above 2021’s report. Upland cotton is estimated at 12.3 million acres — up 11% from 2021, and 95% of Upland cotton planted acres are biotech varieties, which is down 2% from 2021.

Wheat is up 1% from 2021, with wheat planted area estimated at 47.1 million acres. Unfortunately, this is the 5th lowest all wheat planted area on record since 1919. Winter wheat acreage is up 1% from 2021 at 34.0 million acres, and other spring wheat planted area is estimated at 11.1 million acres.
