Italy Approves of Experimentation of NBT Products

Italy’s political groups have unanimously voted for field experimentation of products of new breeding technologies (NBTs) to be authorized according to a release. This vote is historic for Italy’s agricultural industry.

“It is a step that changes the country’s perception of genetic innovation,” said Luigi Cattivelli, director of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Center of the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA). CREA is the largest research center in the Italian agri-food sector.

Originally, new breeding technologies, like CRISPR, were only allowed in vitro. This legislation is the first that promotes NBTs instead of setting limitations.
