27 EU Agri-Food Groups Unite on NGT Traceability, Labelling

As the EU advances its regulatory framework for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), upcoming trilogue negotiations are set to focus on the traceability and labelling of Category 1 NGT products. This remains a contentious issue due to its impact on various segments of the agri-food value chain.

At the heart of the debate is how to distinguish between conventional-like NGT plants (Category 1) and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The European Commission’s proposal seeks to exempt Category 1 NGTs — those similar to conventional varieties — from strict GMO regulations, according to a press release.However, concerns remain over the possible introduction of mandatory traceability and labelling for these products.

In a joint position paper, 27 EU agri-food value chain organisations representing millions of farmers and thousands of businesses outlined key positions:

Support for Choice: Backing the Commission and Council’s approach that enables breeders, farmers, supply chain actors, and consumers to choose whether to use NGTs.

Opposition to Mandatory Labelling: Warning that mandatory traceability and labelling would impose unnecessary costs, enforcement burdens, and trade barriers.

Need for Public Awareness: Emphasising the importance of public understanding to build an informed consumer base on the benefits and safety of NGTs.
