Official and private seed associations meet to agree on an agenda, share experiences and strengthen ties.

On April 26, 2023, a meeting was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, organized by the MERCOSUR Seed Commission, which brought together delegates from different public and private organizations from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to work on issues related to the regional seed sector.

The agenda included the analysis of how to improve trade, competitiveness and control of seeds in the region, while assessing how to simplify and streamline regional processes related to quality, certification and export and import of seeds, among other factors.

After several years, the MERCOSUR Seed Group is once again inviting the private sector to exchange ideas and experiences, strengthen ties and coordinate activities with a view to strengthening the agricultural sector in general and the seed sector in particular.

The MERCOSUR Seed Commission operates within the Working Subgroup (SGT) No. 8 on “Agriculture”, which is the permanent technical negotiation forum for the coordination of public policies and the development of common policies for the MERCOSUR member states.

Prior to the joint meeting of official delegates and the seed industry, the main MERCOSUR seed associations met to draw up a common working agenda and align positions for the meeting with regulators the following day.

This meeting has undoubtedly been a great starting point in the search to harmonize regulations and facilitate seed trade in the region.
