Fernando Gonzalez Explains the Secret to Success in Plant Breeding Today

Fernando Gonzalez comes from a rural Mexico background and developed a strong interest in agriculture. Initially, he wanted to become an extension agent to help communities develop their farming systems and irrigation. However, during his undergraduate studies, he became captivated by genetics and plant breeding, particularly when working with corn and observing its genetic variability in response to different stresses. This fascination led him to choose corn as a primary focus, and he pursued a career in plant breeding, initially working with barley before returning to corn.

Gonzalez, a National Association of Plant Breeders Lifetime Achievement Award winner speaking at this year’s NAPB conference in Greenville, SC, tells us that throughout his career, he emphasized training, coaching, and developing others. Gonzalez became a mentor to many people in the field of agriculture and plant breeding.

He believes in the importance of collaboration and learning from different disciplines to solve problems together.

Regarding the changes in plant breeding since he started working in the industry, advancements in technology have had a significant impact, he says. Phenotypic measurements have been replaced by more precise tools, including molecular breeding techniques and the use of markers. Additionally, tools such as drones and satellites enable better and more precise measurements. These advancements have enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of plant breeding practices.

For young plant breeders today, Gonzalez advises learning, challenging oneself, and utilizing available technologies to solve problems. Specialization is becoming more prevalent, so learning from others and acquiring a diverse range of tools and knowledge is crucial for success in plant breeding.

He also emphasizes the value of an organization like the NAPB because it brings together professionals from various disciplines. Plant breeders often focus heavily on their specific crops, but the NAPB provides an opportunity to hear different perspectives and learn from vegetable breeders and others working with different crops. The organization facilitates networking and collaboration, allowing breeders to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and share knowledge and germplasm. The NAPB plays a vital role in fostering a strong community of plant breeders, Gonzalez goes on to say.
