Limagrain Cereal Seeds and Saskatchewan Pulse Growers are Changing the Game in Pulse Crops

With a background in the seed sector and bringing new genetics to farmers, I’m excited to take on a new opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of a pioneer in the cereal seed space, now leveraging that success into opportunities in pulses.

Limagrain Cereal Seeds (LCS) has always had a unique focus solely on seeds. This specialization allows us to channel our efforts into delivering the best possible products to farmers, empowering them to achieve their full potential.

LCS’s most recent innovation is in pulses, specifically peas and lentils, within Western Canada. We recognize the immense value and potential of pulses and are committed to making a significant impact in this sector. By investing in pulse breeding programs and forming strategic partnerships, we aim to drive progress and innovation in this important industry.

The parent company of LCS, Group Limagrain, began in France in 1965 as a farmers’ cooperative. Today, with almost 9,000 employees, it strategically places cereal breeding programs worldwide. Using elite germplasm across six continents, LCS provides U.S. and Canadian growers access to top genetics. Our advanced speed breeding techniques bring improved varieties to market rapidly, revolutionizing the industry.

A History of Innovation

Limagrain Field Seeds has been on the Canadian scene since 2015, when it first collaborated with Canterra Seeds to form Limagrain Cereals Research Canada, bringing cutting-edge new wheat varieties to growers.

However, it’s the recent partnership with Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) that has got us ready for prime time, so to speak.

This collaboration has provided us with access to new and existing germplasm and the opportunity to integrate elite genetics into our breeding program. Drawing from our strong pulse breeding expertise in Europe, we are eager to tailor varieties that cater to the unique needs of western Canadian farmers, enhancing their productivity and resilience.

Nonetheless, we remain mindful of the challenges that lie ahead. Demonstrating the value of our varieties and ensuring they stand out in the market is essential for their success.

Central to our mission is building lasting relationships with seed growers and farmers. Our recent interactions with the board members of SPG in the fields have been invaluable, and we are committed to incorporating their guidance and feedback into our breeding program to ensure it solves farmers’ greatest challenges. Their insight ensures that our offerings are tailored to address real-world challenges and maximize their impact.

Stay tuned for exciting things.
