INTA Unveils High-Performance, Disease-Resistant Bread Wheat Varieties for Argentina

Wheat plays a vital role in Argentina’s economy, not only for its contribution to agro-industrial development but also for its importance in producing high-quality flour for the bakery and food industries. In this context, INTA’s National Program for the Genetic Improvement of Bread Wheat operates through a network of agricultural experimental stations and specialized laboratories in molecular biology, quality, pathology, and statistics. The program focuses on developing high-yielding cultivars that are adapted to diverse agroecological conditions and resistant to key threats.

As part of this effort, three new varieties — MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 324, 423, and MS INTA 924 — have been added to the 22 developed over a decade of collaboration with LDC, which markets them under its Macro Seed brand. Additionally, two more cultivars — MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 526 and 625 — are currently in the registration process, according to a press release.

“The success in the adoption and dissemination of a new variety of wheat lies in two pillars. First of all, the characteristics of the novelty are important, such as better agronomic performance and, secondly, the rapid availability of quality seed that meets the demand of the market that wishes to adopt it is highlighted, “said Guillermo Donaire, specialist of the Genetic Improvement Program in wheat of INTA Marcos Juárez -Córdoba-.

According to the researcher, “the programs for the creation of new varieties require an adequate and agile availability of resources in order to ensure the continuity of the work to achieve the objectives pursued.” With these advances, “from INTA we reaffirm our commitment to agricultural and Argentine wheat innovation, guaranteeing more efficient and competitive crops in the global market,” said Donaire.

MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 324 is a long-intermediate cycle variety with high yield potential, supported by a high number of fertile spikes and excellent leaf health. It belongs to quality group 3 and offers strong commercial traits, including high thousand-kernel weight and hectoliter weight.

MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 423 is also a long-intermediate cycle variety, classified in quality group 1. It stands out for its excellent commercial and industrial quality, along with very good grain yield. The variety shows strong resistance to major foliar diseases, including leaf, yellow, and stem rust.

Meanwhile, MS INTA 924 is a short-cycle variety with very high grain yield potential and very good leaf health. It falls under quality group 3 but demonstrates excellent commercial characteristics.

Innovative Varieties on the Horizon

Argentina’s wheat breeding program continues to boost yield, quality, and disease resistance through advanced biotechnology, hybridization, and elite line testing. Two new varieties — MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 526 and 625 — are currently undergoing registration with INASE and are expected to reach the market by 2027 under LDC’s Macro Seed brand.

MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 526, developed from Baguette 31 and Klein Castor, offers high yield potential, strong disease resistance, and broad adaptability across production zones.

Due to their strong overall performance, MS INTA MDA Bonaerense 526 and 625 are undergoing registration with the National Seed Institute (INASE) and are expected to be released in 2027 as new hard bread wheat varieties. They will be marketed through a technology transfer agreement with Louis Dreyfus Company Argentina S.A. (Macro Seed).

These additions expand the catalog of 22 cultivars developed over a decade of collaboration with LDC. Notable varieties include MS INTA Bonaerense 817, a short-cycle type with strong sales in central-northern Argentina; MS INTA 119, a long-cycle, high-yield variety widely adopted by producers; MS INTA 221, selected for its adaptability and disease resistance; and MS INTA 521, known for its baking quality and rust resistance.
