DuPont Launches Best-In-Class Phytophthora Protection for US Soybeans

DuPont prides itself on delivering what the market needs. DuPont’s newest fungicide seed treatment product, Lumisena™, does just that, offering growers protection against Phytophthora, the most prevalent soybean disease in the United States. Luminsena will be available to growers in the fall of 2017 for the 2018 spring planting season.

“Grower and industry feedback helps drive our research efforts to bring the best offerings forward,” said Ron Sabatka, product development manager for DuPont Seed Treatment.

Solutions are built through collaboration, both internally and externally. “We work with many agriculture companies to explore opportunities for early testing of their products’ potential as a component of the solutions we provide,” Sabatka said. “This approach helps us offer more options to growers.”

DuPont uses its industry-leading knowledge of seed treatment products and how to apply those products to seeds through their assembly technique, seeking to create new product combinations that can be applied consistently by various application equipment.  DuPont understands that the solution has to work from concept to the grower’s field and deliver the promised product efficacy.  The treating process is complex, with multiple treatments being loaded. And compatibility of those treatments is critical.

Lumisena™ offers a new mode of action for a pervasive disease, with proven results. Although soybean genetics offer internal trait tolerances to the disease, Phytophthora continues to rob yields from growers. The U.S. Soybean Board estimated that 300 million bushels in soybean yields were lost to the disease over the last ten years.

Results from multi-year field trials show Lumisena™ brings higher yields under moderate to heavy disease pressure, improving yields by 1.7 bushels per acre compared to the industry standard seed treatment.

Sabatka notes that the current standard seed treatment options for Phytophthora have remained relatively unchanged, with no significant new modes of action for the last 20 years. Lumisena™ is a new, improved addition to the arsenal of tools that growers can use to protect their soybean crop.

This is welcome news to growers whose crops need protection against this highly prevalent water-mold disease, which impacts all soybean-growing regions. “Lumisena™ offers protection against all life cycle phases of Phytophthora . It improves stand establishment and, in the presence of the disease, positively impacts vigor. The plants are healthier.

“Lumisena enables soybeans to get off to a strong, healthy start to maximize early season growth for greater yield potential at harvest,” said Sabatka.

“Lumisena™ offers the best-in-class protection. Phytophthora isn’t a niche disease, and protecting soybeans from this No. 1 disease is imperative,” he added.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved Lumisena entry into the marketplace last fall, and DuPont will exhibit the new product’s benefits in large acreage demonstration plots during the 2017 growing season. “We invite seed suppliers and their staffs to take the opportunity to look at these plots. Interested seed companies and professional treating retailers and distributors can be in the marketplace with Lumisena™ in 2018,” Sabatka said.

With the introduction of Lumisena™, DuPont’s seed treatment platform continues to grow and is an integral part of DuPont’s agricultural business.
