Innovation in an Industry Of Action: The Changing World of Seed Treatment

Our industry is one of action. Although we plant and harvest our crops according to Mother Nature’s cycles and weather whims, change is the constant in agriculture.

Farmers are always two steps ahead – we have to be. We prepare our soils ahead of planting and tilling. During planting, we’re planning: how can we best protect crops from pest and disease threats? When is the best time to harvest? How can we make this year’s better than the last?

To farm is to do, to act. To think ahead, always. We know that, because our work has always been shaped by farmers: their challenges, their constraints, and their ambitions.

Drawing from a 250-year legacy of agricultural science, we’ve always met growers where they are, responding to their needs with market-leading innovations that help them to grow high yields. For growers, we are a trusted partner because we earned that honor over decades of collaboration and customer dedication.

This bold approach is what’s seen us become the market leader in crop protection and seed treatment, with a pipeline of breakthrough innovations designed to deliver measurable value for growers and the food system.

Our world-class AI capabilities, dedicated investment in R&D, and legacy of deep agricultural knowledge, uniquely position us to help farmers meet today’s ever-changing challenges.

The Market Leader

Farmers are not easily fooled. They need products that they can rely on to deliver results, even in unpredictable conditions. Think: seeds that carry pest and disease-threat resistance built in but can also grow in degraded soils and survive in drought and heavy rain. Seed-applied solutions that deliver precise protection at the point of highest biological leverage: the germination window. Tools farmers can add to their toolkit that also keep up with ever-changing country regulations.

We think ahead, always. It may sound counterintuitive, but in agriculture, innovation is a long-term commitment, often requiring more than a decade of research, regulatory review, and field validation, before farmers see the benefits.

And for farmers, innovation is only meaningful when it translates into productivity, resilience, and return on investment. That’s why our approach combines advanced chemistry, seed genetics, and agronomic expertise to deliver solutions that perform not only in controlled trials, but in real farming conditions.

We design our solutions with the future in mind. With dedicated investment in our world-leading R&D pipeline, supercharged by AI-enabled molecule modelling and field performance analytics, we design molecules that are efficacious, cost-effective and that meet farmers’ needs – now and in the future.

Consider our TYMIRIUM® technology. Fifteen years in the making, this breakthrough innovation provides long-lasting protection against plant-parasitic nematodes and early diseases. These invisible threats can devastate crops and lead to yield losses that can reach double-digit percentages in heavily infested fields — a significant economic burden for growers worldwide.

The benefits this provides for farmers cannot be understated. But what’s often overlooked is just how unprecedented this technology is. Back in 2008, when we began what would become TYMIRIUM® technology, the market for nematode management solutions was significantly smaller and less technologically advanced than it is today.

Parasitic nematodes, or roundworms, were not well understood — and not all forms of these worms pose a threat to crops. In fact, many types promote soil and plant health by feeding on harmful bacteria, fungi, or other microscopic creatures. Any new solution needed to deliver effective control of plant-parasitic nematodes while supporting overall soil health and biological balance.

It was a high bar to meet, but our unprecedented technology did exactly that. The product we began designing more than 15 years ago is today registered or is progressing through regulatory approvals in dozens of countries, across a wide range of crops.

Challenge Breeds Innovation

Change is the norm in agriculture. But today it seems as if the world itself is in flux, with increasing weather extremes, geopolitical fluctuations, the shifting sands of regulatory decisions, and the hyper-speed of technological advancements all affecting how we live. Consumer behavior is changing how we farm and what we grow; regulatory changes affect farmers’ decisions, and grower behavior impacts how we act as trusted partners.

By necessity, the way that we innovate needs to not only keep up with the changing times; it needs to look ahead. As groundbreaking as our pioneering TYMIRIUM® technology was, it was also just the first building block in a new generation of agricultural solutions.

From this came VICTRATO®, our seed treatment solution for corn, soybeans, cereals, cotton, and others. What sets VICTRATO® apart is the breadth of protection from a single seed application: comprehensive below-ground defense against plant-parasitic nematodes and soil-borne diseases, combined with above-ground protection extending into the crop cycle, including outstanding control of foliar diseases at critical yield-determining stages. This dual-axis protection is the mechanism behind the yield results growers are achieving across more than 5,000 trials worldwide: consistent increases of 5 to 20%, depending on pest pressure and geography. A plant established without early biological stress, and defended continuously through the season, simply performs differently — and that difference is measurable at harvest.

Our future-focused approach also extends beyond solutions to the very seeds we offer. Farmers need robust, resilient seeds that can deliver high yields, consistently. We breed these traits into all of our seeds – but our new X-TERRA® technology recently launched in France is a meaningful step forward for wheat. Harnessing the power of hybrid vigor, these seeds deliver productive crops and secure stability in fluctuating environments. As seed genetics deliver greater yield potential, protecting that potential during establishment becomes non-negotiable — Seedcare™ technology like VICTRATO® closes that loop.

However, solutions and seeds alone aren’t enough. Deep agronomic experience and farmer know-how underpin how we use these breakthrough products. That’s why we’ve pooled our talents to areas we can best serve farmers in our Seedcare & Biologicals Institutes. This network of more than 120 experts across more than 16 institutes worldwide is the beating heart of our market-leading knowledge. And it’s that knowledge that we infuse into the products that we bring to market and the advice that we offer growers. This expertise is translated into practical recommendations, field demonstrations, and stewardship programs that help growers make confident decisions season after season.

The next decade of Seedcare™ will be defined by platform thinking: integrated, precise, and built for a world where every planting decision carries more weight than the last. That’s the world TYMIRIUM® technology and VICTRATO® were designed for.

Legacies are not built overnight. Neither is trust. But Syngenta has forged both by working with millions of farmers around the world, across all climates, crops, and geographies. As an industry of action, agriculture will always change. And we will continue to walk alongside farmers as it does — wherever that road may lead.
