British Society of Plant Breeders marks six decades of championing innovation, collaboration and progress across UK agriculture.

The British Society of Plant Breeders is celebrating a major milestone this year, marking 60 years of representing and supporting the UK plant breeding sector.

Since its establishment in the 1960s, BSPB has played a central role in championing innovation, collaboration and excellence in plant breeding. Over the past six decades, advances in crop improvement have helped deliver higher-yielding, disease-resistant and more reliable crop varieties, supported by modern and novel breeding techniques. These developments have enabled farmers and growers to produce crops with greater resilience, reduced input requirements and an important contribution to long-term food security.

Supporting Progress in UK Agriculture

BSPB has been proud to stand at the heart of agricultural progress, working closely with its members and a wide network of valued stakeholders, including breeders, farmers, researchers, policymakers and partners across the food supply chain, according to a press release.

Through these partnerships, BSPB has helped shape the frameworks, collaborations and scientific achievements that underpin a productive, sustainable and resilient farming sector. From securing plant breeders’ rights and establishing farm-saved seed systems, to supporting the development of innovative, high-performing and climate-resilient crops, BSPB and its members have played a vital role in delivering benefits across the UK and beyond.

Looking Back on Six Decades of Achievement

To mark the anniversary, BSPB is sharing a journey through the importance of plant breeding over the past 60 years, highlighting the progress, people and partnerships that have helped shape the sector.

The feature includes key plant breeding milestones from the past six decades, reflections from BSPB Chair Jonathan Tann, and a crop and trials update from Technical Manager Louise Everest.

Industry Voices Highlight the Value of Plant Breeding

The anniversary feature also includes contributions from across the wider agricultural and food supply chain, demonstrating the impact of plant breeding beyond the field.

Julian South, Executive Director of the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain, shares insights on how genetic improvements have supported the brewing process and helped meet end-user requirements. British Sugar also highlights how traits bred into modern varieties have helped combat disease and strengthen crop performance.

Plant Breeding’s Role in the Future

As BSPB celebrates this significant milestone, the organisation is also looking ahead with optimism and ambition. BSPB will continue working in partnership with members and stakeholders to meet the challenges of the future and ensure plant breeding remains central to a thriving, productive and sustainable agricultural industry.
