SY4135 will be the first canola variety Syngenta brings to market, with commercial quantities available in the fall of 2013 for seeding in 2014. “SY4135 is a great agronomic fit right across Western Canada,” says Duane Johnson, head of the western commercial unit for Syngenta Canada. “This canola variety is a high-yielding mid-season Genuity Roundup Ready product with consistent standability and harvestability along with resistance to blackleg.

According to Johnson, field evaluation trials will continue into 2013 at numerous sites across the Prairies. “Syngenta is focusing on the whole canola package―from seed and seed treatments to a wide range of crop protection products to provide the right combination for each farm in order to maximize growers’ return on investment,” says Johnson.

The current Syngenta canola portfolio features a range of seed care and pesticide products for canola, including Helix Vibrance seed treatment, Astound fungicide and Matador insecticide. Touchdown Total, a glyphosate-based herbicide, can also be used on SY4135.

“We expect to have excellent supplies of SY4135 available to farmers for the 2014 growing season,” says Johnson. “And we will continue to work with breeders and business partners to find the best fit along with the best technologies for our western Canadian customers.

According to Johnson, future varieties will also be developed using leading technologies, offering strong yield and optimal weed control. “We have been working for years to bring leading technologies to the marketplace. We are very pleased to enter the canola seed business at this time,” explains Johnson.

Johnson stresses that this is only the beginning of many years of work, as Syngenta will continue to increase its canola seed offerings over the coming years. Efforts in 2013 will focus on strategic trialing of new canola varieties at the field level with commercial growers. “We plan to continue to collaborate with numerous canola providers and breeders to bring growers the best germplasm and traits that address their unique production needs,” emphasizes Johnson.

Syngenta Canada will also rely on its previous work overseas, where parent company Syngenta AG already markets a number of canola-quality oilseed rape varieties.
