Todd Martin, CEO of Independent Professional Seed Association, released the following statement regarding Tom Burrus of Burrus Seed, Arenzville, IL.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of the ‘Grand Gentleman of the Seed Industry,’ Tom Burrus of Burrus Seed.

Tom, along with his brother, Todd, are the second generation of owners of Burrus Seed. Founded in 1935, Tom and Todd have continued the original Burrus Mission, believing in the value of service and integrity. That exemplifies Tom’s life.

My personal story with Tom goes like this – I met Tom Burrus for the first time in 2007. I was struck by his friendly and welcoming nature, along with his singular humor. Little did I know on that day, I would become the recipient of his regular humorous observations via email. Those stories were always a source of a smile when they showed up in my inbox. That humor carried over to almost every discussion I had with Tom through the years, regardless of subject.

I am certain that everyone has a ‘Tom Burrus Story’ to share.

Tom served as IPSA President in 2006, and has always been a strident supporter and great voice for both the Association and the Independent Seed Companies.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s family, particularly his wife, Marcie, and all his loved ones.”

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Private interment will be at Arenzville North Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Arenzville United Methodist Church in Arenzville. Memorials are suggested to Arenzville United Methodist Church, Passavant Area Hospital Foundation or the Independent Professional Seed Association Scholarship. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
