CIHEAM Zaragoza (the Spanish branch of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies) and ANOVE (the Spanish National Association of Plant Breeders) have signed a framework agreement to foster cooperation in training, research, and innovation in plant breeding. Signed by Raúl Compés López, director of CIHEAM Zaragoza, and Antonio Villarroel López de la Garma, director general of ANOVE, the agreement establishes a long-term partnership aimed at strengthening ties between the two institutions and advancing the Spanish agrifood sector.

The alliance will enhance CIHEAM Zaragoza students’ knowledge of the plant breeding industry, focusing on the development of new plant and seed varieties. It will offer insights into the sector’s core activities, challenges, technological advances, and regulatory environment. ANOVE will support connections with its affiliated organizations, creating opportunities for student internships, applied projects, and professional mentoring. Both institutions will collaborate on disseminating research and innovation outcomes and participate in joint technical committees and working groups to support ongoing initiatives, according to a press release.

Together, they will organize workshops, seminars, conferences, and career fairs to provide students and young professionals with opportunities in plant variety development. This partnership supports their shared goal of fostering a sustainable, innovative, and competitive agriculture sector while preparing future professionals for the Mediterranean agrifood challenges.

The agreement is initially valid for three years, with automatic renewal provisions. It reflects ANOVE’s mission to address food security and societal needs through innovation in plant and seed development, and CIHEAM Zaragoza’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, food systems, and rural development across the Mediterranean region.
